چکیده

The presence of plasma waves upstream from the Martian bow shock, with frequencies near local proton cyclotron frequency in spacecraft frame, constitutes, principle, an indirect signature for existence planetary protons ionization exospheric hydrogen. In this study, we determine "proton wave” (PCW) occurrence rate between October 2014 and February 2020, based on Magnetometer Solar Wind Ion Analyzer measurements Mars Atmosphere Volatile EvolutioN mission. We characterize its dependence several wave solar wind (SW) properties, longitude ranges. confirm a previously reported long-term trend more PCWs perihelion, likely associated changes hydrogen density. Furthermore, report first time decrease median PCW amplitude each consecutive perihelion. Such variability cannot be attributed to differences distribution SW conditions. This could inputs, foreshock effects, asymmetries due convective electric field influencing newborn protons. addition, observe frequently low intermediate interplanetary magnetic (IMF) cone angles, slower speeds, higher densities. IMF angle preference results trade-off linear growth rates, saturation energies, pick-up Moreover, dependencies speed density indicate importance characteristic transit timescale charge exchange process coupling exosphere.

Ionospheric plasma density variations observed at Mars by MAVEN/LPW

We report on initial observations made by the Langmuir Probe and Waves relaxation sounding experiment on board the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission. These measurements yield the ionospheric thermal plasma density, and we use these data here for an initial survey of its variability. Studying orbit-to-orbit variations, we show that the relative variability of the ionosp...

Strong plume fluxes at Mars observed by MAVEN: An important planetary ion escape channel

We present observations by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission of a substantial plume-like distribution of escaping ions from the Martian atmosphere, organized by the upstream solar wind convection electric field. From a case study of MAVEN particle-and-field data during one spacecraft orbit, we identified three escaping planetary ion populations: plume fluxes mainly alon...

Plasma clouds and snowplows: Bulk plasma escape from Mars observed by MAVEN

We present initial Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observations and preliminary interpretation of bulk plasma loss from Mars. MAVEN particle and field measurements show that planetary heavy ions derived from the Martian atmosphere can escape in the form of discrete coherent structures or “clouds.” The ions in these clouds are unmagnetized or weakly magnetized, have velocities wel...

The spatial distribution of planetary ion fluxes near Mars observed by MAVEN

We present the results of an initial effort to statistically map the fluxes of planetary ions on a closed surface around Mars. Choosing a spherical shell ~1000 km above the planet, we map both outgoing and incoming ion fluxes (with energies >25 eV) over a 4month period. The results show net escape of planetary ions behind Mars and strong fluxes of escaping ions from the northern hemisphere with...

Comparison of accelerated ion populations observed upstream of the bow shocks at Venus and Mars

Foreshock ions are compared between Venus and Mars at energies of 0.6∼20 keV using the same ion instrument, the Ion Mass Analyser, on board both Venus Express and Mars Express. Venus Express often observes accelerated protons (2∼6 times the solar wind energy) that travel away from the Venus bow shock when the spacecraft location is magnetically connected to the bow shock. The observed ions have...
